Obtaining a Marriage License in South Carolina:

1.  Both the bride and groom-to-be must apply together at a Sough Carolina County Courthouse Marriage License Bureau.

2.  Most courthouses are open from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

3.  Fees vary by county location, but only cash will be accepted.

4.  A driver's license and Social Security (original) Card or Birth Certificate are required; a birth certificate is not, nor is a blood test or a physical obligatory.

5.  You do not have to be a resident of South Carolina, or even of the United States, to marry in South Carolina.

6.  Once you have applied, there is a 24-hour waiting period before you can pick up your license.

7.  Your marriage license is good in any South Carolina county, regardless of at which South Carolina Courthouse it was obtained.

8.  Register of Deeds (Marriage License) in S.C.
(803) 576-1963 or (803) 576-1992.

Optional State Income Tax Credit
As a result of a state law passed in 2006, a man and a woman who have successfully completed a qualifying premarital preparation course may receive a one-time $50 non-refundable state income tax credit.  To qualify, a couple must:
  • Attend a minimum 6-hour course of instruction taught by a professional counselor or active member of the clergy;
  • Complete the course within 12 months prior to applying for a license;
  • Complete the course together rather than individually; and
  • Receive a certificate of completion, with the number of hours of instruction and the credentials of the course provider.
This certificate must be submitted when applying for the license.

The bride and groom are responsible for giving the three (3) copies of the marriage license to the religious official or notary public who will conduct the wedding ceremony.  After the ceremony, that person shall execute the licenses and submit two (2) copies to the Probate Court or Clerk of Court in the country where the wedding took place.  One (1) copy is provided to the bride and groom.
